
When you were a child, summer seemed to last forever.
A school vacation could feel endless. A birthday seemed impossibly far away. Even waiting for the weekend could make a few days feel enormous.
Then something changes.
You become an adult, and suddenly an entire month disappears.
You blink, and it is December again. A year that seemed to begin only recently is already ending. Looking back, the last decade can feel strangely compressed.
But the clock has not changed.
A minute is still a minute. A day still contains 24 hours.
So why can life seem to move faster as we get older?
The surprising answer is that the brain does not experience time the same way a clock measures it.
And scientists still do not have one definitive explanation for why the years can seem to accelerate.
Instead, several ideas point to an intriguing combination of memory, attention, routine, novelty and the way we think about our lives.
The clock is not speeding up
Before looking at possible explanations, there is an important distinction to make.
There is a difference between objective time and subjective time.
Objective time is what a clock measures.
Subjective time is how quickly a period seems to pass.
Those two things can disagree.

They are describing how life feels.
Do older people actually feel that time passes faster?

There is some evidence that they do—but the effect is not as simple or universal as the popular saying suggests.
One large study involving 499 people between the ages of 14 and 94 found that age was related to reports of how quickly time seemed to pass. However, the researchers described the effects as small to moderate, accounting for at most about 10% of the variance in their measures. They also cautioned that the findings had methodological limitations.
Another study involving 1,865 adults aged 16 to 80 found something even more interesting.
People of all ages tended to say that time passes quickly. Age differences were generally very small, except when participants were asked specifically about how quickly the previous ten years had passed. The researchers found stronger support for an explanation involving time pressure than for a simple age-based acceleration of time.
And another experience-sampling study comparing younger and older people found no difference in their judgments of the rate at which time was passing in everyday life. Instead, factors such as emotion and attention to the current activity were important predictors.
So the scientific answer is not:
“Your brain makes time speed up when you get old.”
It is much more interesting.
Our perception of time is influenced by what we are doing, what we notice, how we feel and how we remember the period afterward.
One of the biggest clues: novelty
Think about your first day at a new job.
You probably notice dozens of things.
Where the bathrooms are.
Where people sit.
What the building looks like.
Who you meet.
How the computer system works.
Where you get lunch.
Everything feels new.
Now imagine working in exactly the same environment for five years.
You may still have a normal eight-hour workday, but many details no longer require conscious attention.
Your brain has learned the routine.
That difference may matter when you later look back at the period.
Novel experiences tend to give us more distinctive memories.
Routine experiences can blend together.
This has led researchers to consider the role of memory density and the number of distinctive events we can recall when judging how long a period seemed to last.
Imagine two summers.
During the first, you travel to three unfamiliar places, learn to surf, meet new people, attend a concert and take hundreds of photographs.
During the second, you follow almost exactly the same routine every day.
When both summers are over, the first may seem much larger in memory.
The second can feel as though it vanished.
That does not mean the second summer was objectively shorter.
It means your memory may contain fewer distinctive landmarks with which to reconstruct it.
Why childhood can feel so long
This helps explain one reason childhood may seem enormous in retrospect.
For a child, many experiences are new.
Your first day of school.
Your first sleepover.
Your first trip on an airplane.
Your first close friendship.
Your first bicycle.
Your first major holiday.
Your first time seeing the ocean.
Your first time staying awake late enough to feel like an adult.
The list keeps growing.
As we age, we have already encountered many basic experiences.
A trip to a familiar store is not encoded in the same way as visiting a completely unfamiliar place.
A normal Monday may contain very little that stands out from the Mondays surrounding it.
This does not mean adults stop having new experiences. They obviously do.
It simply means that the balance between novelty and familiarity can change throughout life.
That is one reason researchers have proposed that memory for distinctive experiences may influence our judgments about how quickly larger periods of life seem to have passed.
But there is an important complication.
The “more memories = more time” explanation is not enough to explain everything.
Recent research has found that several popular explanations for why life seems to pass quickly are not consistently supported. A 2024 investigation, for example, tested ideas involving routine and personal growth and found a more complicated relationship between remembered experiences and perceived passage of time.
In other words, there probably isn’t a single trick responsible for the feeling.
The strange difference between living time and remembered time
Here is where things get even more fascinating.
Ask yourself:
Does time feel fast while you are experiencing it, or does it feel fast when you look back?
Those are not necessarily the same question.
Imagine a two-hour movie that you absolutely love.
While watching it, the two hours may seem to disappear.
But afterward, you might remember many scenes, characters and moments.
Now imagine spending two hours doing something painfully boring.
During the experience, every minute may feel long.
Yet when you look back on a repetitive period containing few memorable events, it can seem strangely compressed.
Researchers distinguish between judgments about how long something lasted and judgments about how quickly time seemed to pass. These are related but are not identical psychological judgments.

Routine can make years blur together
Consider what happens when life becomes highly repetitive.
You wake up.
Work.
Eat.
Check your phone.
Do some chores.
Watch something.
Go to bed.
Repeat.
There is nothing inherently wrong with routine. In fact, routines can make life easier by reducing the amount of mental effort required for familiar tasks.
But routines can make neighboring days harder to distinguish in memory.
Imagine trying to remember what you did on the third Tuesday of last month.
Unless something unusual happened, you may have almost no distinctive memory of it.
Now imagine that on one Tuesday you took an unexpected road trip, met an old friend, saw something extraordinary and ended the day somewhere completely unfamiliar.
That Tuesday has landmarks.
The ordinary Tuesday may not.
When we later reconstruct a month or a year, those landmarks can influence our impression of how much happened.
This is one reason a year filled with distinctive experiences can feel different in retrospect from a year dominated by repetition.
But again, this is not a universal rule.
Research on the subjective speed of time suggests that routine alone cannot explain the entire phenomenon. Other factors, including emotion, attention, life circumstances and the way people evaluate their past, also matter.
Attention changes the experience of time
Where you place your attention also matters.
When you are absorbed in an activity, you may stop monitoring time.
You are not constantly thinking:
“It’s been 12 minutes.”
“Now it’s 13.”
“Now it’s 14.”
Your attention is somewhere else.
This can make time seem to disappear.
The opposite can happen when you are waiting.
If you keep checking the clock, every small interval becomes noticeable.
Researchers studying time perception have found that attention can influence judgments of duration, particularly under certain experimental conditions. Reviews of psychological time research have also shown that emotional arousal and attention can alter how long events seem to last.
This gives us a useful everyday example.
A teenager waiting for a text message may feel that ten minutes is an eternity.
An adult spending ten minutes scrolling through an engaging conversation may suddenly realize that ten minutes disappeared.
The clock did exactly the same thing in both situations.
The mind did not.
Your life may feel faster when you have less time pressure – not more

There is another interesting possibility.
As adults become responsible for work, family, bills, appointments and countless other commitments, days can become densely scheduled.
One task leads directly to another.
Monday becomes Tuesday.
Tuesday becomes Friday.
Friday becomes the weekend.
Then another week begins.
Some research has linked the experience of time passing quickly with time pressure rather than simply with chronological age. In the large study mentioned earlier, this explanation received more support than a straightforward theory that aging itself accelerates subjective time.
This makes intuitive sense.
When your attention is constantly directed toward the next task, you may have little opportunity to notice the passage of the current moment.
Life can feel like a sequence of transitions rather than a series of clearly separated experiences.
There may also be a mathematical illusion
You may have heard the idea that each year becomes a smaller percentage of your life.
When you are five years old, one year represents 20% of your entire life.
At 50, one year represents only 2%.
It sounds convincing.
But it is important not to confuse an interesting comparison with a proven explanation.
The fact that a year represents a smaller fraction of your total chronological age does not, by itself, demonstrate that your brain perceives that year as shorter.
Researchers have proposed mathematical models of subjective time acceleration, including models based on the accumulation of life experience and novelty. But even recent work describes these as conceptual models rather than a final explanation for the phenomenon.
So the “one year is a smaller percentage of your life” idea is best treated as an intuition—not as the established scientific answer.
Does getting older actually change your internal clock?
This is another popular assumption.
Maybe the brain’s biological timing mechanism simply slows down or changes with age.
There is research on age-related differences in timing and duration judgments, and a meta-analysis found differences between younger and older adults on some kinds of duration estimates. However, the researchers emphasized attention and the allocation of attention between temporal and non-temporal information as an important part of the explanation.
That is very different from saying that your brain contains a literal clock that simply speeds up with age.

That is why two studies can appear to tell different stories while actually asking slightly different questions.
Why do the last ten years sometimes feel like they vanished?
This may be the most relatable version of the mystery.
You look at an old photograph and suddenly realize:
“That was ten years ago?”
The strange thing is that those ten years did not feel like one continuous moment while you were living them.
They contained thousands of days.

We do not remember every ordinary day equally.

Not literally.
You cannot make the Earth rotate more slowly or add more hours to a day.
But you can change some of the ingredients that influence your experience and memory of time.
One of the most useful approaches is to deliberately create distinctive experiences.
Visit somewhere you’ve never been.
Learn something unfamiliar.
Take a different route.
Have a long conversation without your phone.
Try a new hobby.
Cook something you’ve never made.
Explore your own city as though you were a visitor.
These things are not guaranteed to make time feel slower.
But they can create more distinctive memories and make periods of life easier to distinguish when you look back.
There is another strategy that may be even more important:
Pay attention to the moment you’re actually living.
If every free moment is filled with notifications, short videos and rapid switching between tasks, your attention is constantly being redirected.
Sometimes simply doing one thing without repeatedly checking the clock can change your experience of that period.
And if a week feels like it disappeared, it can help to ask:
What do I actually remember from it?
The answer may reveal something more useful than whether time really moved faster.
It may show you where your attention went.
So, why does time seem to move faster as we get older?
There is no single scientific explanation that settles the question.
The popular idea contains a piece of truth: many people do report that years and decades seem to pass more quickly as they age, and some research supports age-related differences in subjective time. But other studies find very small differences or no clear age effect in everyday judgments.
The better explanation is probably more complicated.
Time itself is not speeding up. Our experience and memory of it are changing.
Routine can make days less distinctive.
Novel experiences can create stronger landmarks.
Attention can make minutes feel longer or shorter.
Emotion can alter the way time is experienced.
Life circumstances can create a sense of time pressure.
And memory can compress entire periods of our lives into a handful of vivid moments.
Perhaps that is why adulthood can sometimes feel as though it is accelerating.
Not because the clock is running faster.

And that leaves us with a strangely powerful thought:
If you want a year to feel meaningful when you look back at it, the goal may not be to make time move more slowly.
It may be to give your future self more moments worth remembering.
